Twenty-three percent of students who step foot on campus at BGSU are the first in their family to attend college, known as first-generation students.
The University is committed to welcoming families that might be overwhelmed or otherwise intimidated by the prospect of seeing their student head off to college. In response to this commitment, the Office of Residence Life developed a free Generation Falcon Summer Program for incoming first-generation students.
Generation Falcon welcomed 75 students in 2018, which was the first year this program was offered. The Office of Residence Life hopes to increase the attendance number to 100 students in 2019 and hopes to add a book scholarship for the participants to apply for.
Generation Falcon is a free program designed to make the transition into university life as smooth as possible for the student and their family. Throughout the four-day program, participants:
- Identify campus support resources
- Learn communication and collaboration skills that will lead to positive community engagement
- Identify personal skills and prospects to connect those skills to academic and co-curricular opportunities (Students)
- Gain the knowledge of University processes and parent resources (Parents/Guardians)
With your generous support today, the Office of Residence Life can enhance the program for BGSU first-generation participants by awarding a book scholarship to a few of the participants.
