Thompson Scholarship Programs

The Thompson Scholarship for Working Families provides valuable need-based funding for BGSU students to have access to and achieve their college education.

Created by generous gifts from Bob and Ellen Thompson, the scholarship program is designed to help families that may struggle with the cost of higher education. The program supports new freshmen, new transfer students and continuing students.

With the Thompsons’ support, the University commits to securing additional matching funds to provide qualifying students with $10,000 scholarships through the Thompson Scholarship Program for Working Families. For fall 2019, BGSU is able to provide 500 students this support and the program is expected to grow to provide support to nearly 1,200 students. Your support to the Thompson Scholarship Program for Working Families scholarship provides education to students who may otherwise not have that opportunity.

Beyond the financial support of the scholarship, the Thompson Scholarship Programs fund provides holistic support for each recipient and strives to serve as a springboard for growth while creating opportunities to connect, engage and serve. One avenue to help incoming freshmen recipients connect, engage and serve is through our Summer Link program. This program opens doors for students to connect with other first-year students in the scholarship program, as well as establish a relationship with their scholarship advisor; allows students to move in early, providing more time to adjust and transition to campus; and provides an opportunity for them to engage in conversations, activities and service to help set them on a path for success as a BGSU student and a Thompson Family Scholar.

One student from the 2018 Cohort stated, “As college can be a daunting transition from high school, I am very appreciative for the resources the Thompson Family Scholarship Program has given me. Not only do I have an advisor to help guide me throughout my college career, but their summer orientation program helped prepare me to be successful as I navigate through my first few weeks of college. I am glad to be a part of an organization that cares so much about every one of their members.”

Your support to the Program fund will help offset expenses and enhance programming efforts during the Summer Link Program and throughout the year for all Thompson Family Scholars. Opportunities include personal and professional development, social interaction and engagement, as well as group service events to give back to the BGSU and surrounding communities.
