Preparing Students

Common Reading Experience

A BGSU tradition since 2001, the Common Reading Experience begins with the annual selection of a book that all new first-year students are asked to read during the summer prior to beginning their academic career at BGSU. Members of the campus community are invited to participate as well.

Throughout the year, students discuss the common read in various courses and participate in events designed to complement the book. Traditionally, the author visits campus and interacts with students, faculty, staff and the local community. Classroom visits, panel discussions and a book signing provide opportunities for engagement.

The Common Reading Experience includes creating community among first-year students, faculty, and staff; encouraging students to read beyond textbooks; promoting critical thinking and debate; and providing an introduction to the overall expectations of higher education. While the programming has evolved over the years, the goal of building community through the deep, provocative discussions of a good book has remained a core value.

Support will fund activities, experiential learning opportunities and unique programming that will continue growing this initiative and nurture the love of reading among students.

University Program for Academic Success

University Program for Academic Success (UPAS) is a multi-dimensional program that provides preparation, orientation and academic support for conditionally admitted students. The mission is to help students enroll and persist through college as they engage in their higher education working toward graduation.

The program is designed to provide students individualized academic support and assist with a successful transition to the University environment. UPAS students may select tutoring services from the Learning Commons, receive extensive academic advising, select courses and participate in a bridge experience. They are also assigned a professional advisor who meets with them regularly to track academic progress and provide additional support resources as needed.

We are raising funds to support incoming UPAS students’ participation in the Summer Bridge Program. During this experience, students will participate in a two-day workshop on campus designed to assist their development of strong academic habits, ease their transition to college and become familiar with campus.

Office of Pre-Professional Programs

The Pre-Professional Programs office supports nearly 600 pre-health and pre-law undergraduate students in their pursuit of post baccalaureate programs by identifying expectations, giving insight on how they will be evaluated and providing guidance to assist them in making informed decisions to advance their journey.

With the arrival of the admissions test preparation season, we are seeking assistance with funding to cover the expenses of updated test prep materials and to be able to provide in-person workshops to those needing additional guidance in enhancing their test taking skills.

Your support will provide much needed MCAT, LSAT, GRE, DAT, PCAT and OAT test prep books as well as expand our free workshops to include the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) for students preparing for careers in law and the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE), which impacts four of our nine populations. The Pre-Professional Programs office currently hosts a Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) workshop during Winter Session to prepare our pre-med population for entrance into Medical School.

Summer Academic & Youth Programs

Summer is the perfect time for Pre-College students to explore their career interests. BGSU Pre-College Programs provides opportunities for students to experience the Bowling Green State University campus while expanding their knowledge, building life skills and exploring their interests. BGSU offers residential and day camps throughout the summer.

The goal of this fundraising campaign is to provide materials and camper-ships for students to be able to explore their interests and career aspirations in one of BGSU's Academic Summer Camps in 2019. These Academic Summer Camps allow campers to become more aware of what they're passionate about and how they want to evolve their passions into their community and their futures. Your donation will positively impact these campers and give them an opportunity of a lifetime here at BGSU by following their ambition by attending one of these camps.
